I am wise and growing in wisdom every day. I take to heart the parables of Jesus. I build strong foundations. I count the cost. And I prepare for the long haul. The teachings of Jesus are nuggets of wisdom that can never be resisted or contradicted. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. Luke 21:15
If I do the things that Jesus taught, then my foundation will be built on a rock. When the storms and floods come, my ‘house’ will not be shaken. The wise man built his house on a rock. “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” Luke 6:46-49
Prepare for long haul
The wise bridesmaids brought extra fuel for their lamps. They were ready for a long wait and wanted to keep their lamps burning all through the night.
“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour. Matthew 25:1-13
Count the cost
Count the cost of being a disciple of Jesus. My commitment to Jesus is total and nothing will get in the way of that. “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? Luke 14:28
In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. Luke 14:33
Lord Jesus, help me to build my house on the rock, prepare for the long haul, and count the cost of discipleship. Amen.
