The righteous shall live by faith. Righteous is as righteous does. There is no conflict between faith and works. Faith is the beginning of righteousness and I must work out my salvation with fear and trembling by my righteous attitudes and behavior.
Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.1 John 3:7
Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord. Leviticus 18:5
Acquittal or fire escape?
Only through faith in Jesus Christ can I have righteousness as a covering over my sins. My sins have been forgiven through repentance and the shedding of the blood of the perfect sacrifice, Jesus Christ. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. Hebrews 9:22
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Corinthians 5:21
Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith. Philippians 3:8-9
Righteousness in this sense is a covering over my sins (washing away) so that God does not see them. This covering is very specific and has been provided by God himself. It is part of the spiritual weaponry. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, Ephesians 6:14
But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, Romans 3:21-22
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: Romans 5:1
For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:10
Lord Jesus, I believe in you. I believe you died for my sins. Forgive my sins and grant me your righteousness by your great mercy and grace. I count all things loss for knowing you and that I may gain Christ through faith. Amen.
Walking in righteousness
Righteous is as righteous does. Walking in righteousness means living like I belong to God all the time. Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, Philippians 2:12
I listen to the apostle Peter so that I will never stumble. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 2 Peter 1:10
By walking according to the Spirit, I am walking in righteousness. that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:4
I renounce ungodliness and worldly lusts. . . teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, Titus 2:12
But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 1 Timothy 6:11
Lord Jesus, I desire to live and walk in righteousness. I purpose to live and behave righteously and to always listen to your voice so that I may know your heart. Amen.
