In one sentence Jesus declared all political activism off limits to his followers.The kingdom of God is within you and the world cannot be transformed by political activism. So the only way to promote the kingdom of God is through proclaiming it and living it.
Luke 9:57-60 New International Version (NIV)
57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
The term “zealot” means one who is zealous on behalf of God. As political activists, they advocated the violent expulsion of the Roman Empire from Judah. They are directly responsible for the second holocaust or diaspora in 70 AD. Jesus predicted this event.
Matthew 24:2 New International Version (NIV)
2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
Do you want to protest abortions in your state/nation? You can fulfill God’s will for your life if you begin by volunteering at shelters and counseling centers that provide women who seek an abortion with alternatives that include adoption, financial support, and dignity. If you directly save one life, you have done more than all protests against abortion clinics.
Prayer and fasting
Since we live in the world, we are constantly barraged with various forms of evil. How we respond and collaborate in this murky environment is a personal choice that must include prayer and fasting. The Religious Right has the right idea, but may fall into the trap of too much compromise with evil. Isaiah describes fasting that pleases the Lord as personal action that has political repercussions. (711 BC)
Isaiah 58:6-12 New International Version (NIV)
6 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
9 Then you will call, and the Lord will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
“If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger and malicious talk,
10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.
11 The Lord will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.
12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
Two pathways to the top
Real political change occurs when godly leaders make godly decisions. This is why we are urged to pray for our leaders.
1 Timothy 2:1-4 New International Version (NIV)
2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
The two pathways to political change for a Christian are High Office and Prophecy.
If you personally wish to be the one godly person making godly decisions for your people, you should seek that political high office. This is what Joseph did. He went from prisoner/slave to prime minister and was able to save his country by interpreting the Pharaoh’s dream and rescued Egypt from the drought while bringing his clan to live in Egypt. (1875 BC)
Genesis 41:39-41 New International Version (NIV)
39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. 40 You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.”
Isaiah prophesied to the King of Israel that his ungodly decisions and actions would destroy his nation and it would be accomplished by their neighbor the Assyrians. (735 BC)
Isaiah 7:13-17 New International Version (NIV)
13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. 15 He will be eating curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, 16 for before the boy knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste. 17 The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away from Judah—he will bring the king of Assyria.”
The gist of Isaiah’s prophecy has always been for the Kings and priests to lead their people toward God and righteousness. If you have the ear of your President or national leader, you could tell him/her to grow up and cease their childish ways and begin to make decisions and take actions that are godly. Here is your chance to truly promote the kingdom of God and save your people.
