Health and healing has always been available to the people of God. The early descendants of Adam and Eve lived hundreds of years. Sarah gave birth at nearly 100. The Israelites were never sick during the Exodus. Elisha resurrected the Shunammite’s son after he was killed. Psalm 30:2 says, “Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.”
Heal means to make free from injury or disease, to make sound or whole, to make well again, to restore to health, to cause (an undesirable condition) to be overcome, mend, to patch up or correct (a breach or division), to restore to original purity or integrity.
Life and wholeness
Health and healing is to my body as forgiveness is to my soul. Healing covers all aspects of my well being from conception to resurrection. I am marvelously and wondrously made. God promotes and causes me to become whole. I accept my healing in the same way and with the same faith as I accept my forgiveness and salvation. God’s love and grace extends to unbelievers and outsiders in that he will heal anyone regardless of their faith.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:14-16
Examples from the Old Testament
The ultimate objective of health and healing is eternal life. I am healed because God wants me to live forever in a state of grace. To that end, he heals me and eventually brings me home to be with him. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Psalm 23:6
With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation. Psalm 91:16
Before Noah, people lived hundreds of years. When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch. After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died. When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away. Genesis 5:18-24
Child of promise
Barren women were able to give birth. Sarah, the mother of Samuel, and the Shunnamite woman are examples.
Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” Genesis 21:1-10
Freedom from disease
He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.” Exodus 15:26
Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, Exodus 23:25
The Lord will keep you free from every disease. He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all who hate you. Deuteronomy 7:15
Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram, . . .had leprosy. . . . So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy. 2 Kings 5:1,14
The child of promise died and Elisha raised him back to life. When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch. He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the Lord. Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes. Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite.” And he did. When she came, he said, “Take your son.” 2 Kings 4:32-36
Jehovah-Rapha, God who heals, I believe you heal me and I believe your word that shows you have been healing others. Teach me your ways so that I may be found worthy to stand in your presence. Amen.
The Messiah who was to come would bring forgiveness and healing. Jesus is that Messiah. Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:1-5
I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. Isaiah 42:6-7
But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves. Malachi 4:2
Jehovah-Rapha, God who heals, I praise you and I love you because you heal me. Messiah, you have died for me and by your stripes I am healed. Open my eyes and bring me out of prison. Amen.
Psalms of healing
Many of the Psalms can be prayed. Here are a few favorites. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Psalm 107:20
Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me. Psalm 30:2
Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. Psalm 91:3-7
