I can only be fruitful as I abide in Jesus Christ, the true vine. This is more difficult than simply trusting in the Lord. It is more intimate and personal. It is more immediate and loving. I will abide in Jesus more and more.
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. John 15:1-10
What does it mean to abide?
I often find myself forgetting that Jesus is present with me now. I invite him to sit with me on the bus. I imagine that he is with me when I walk my dog. I want to abide with him and in him all the time. This abiding is an exercise in friendship that renews with every moment. The reality of this abiding can be seen in the results — fruit. When I imagine Jesus is present, my life is exposed to him and any ‘sin’ that is present in me is revealed to me. At these moments, I feel as if I were in a monastery and God is in every aspect of my life. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love;
My fruitful abiding is a type of resting action. I cling to the vine, the fruit clings to me. I am merely a conduit for the fruit. Jesus is the vine, and I enable him to produce the fruit in me. My only responsibility is to abide.
Lord Jesus, I desire to abide in you and you in me. Help me to remember you in my moments and to keep you close as I go through my day. Amen.
