Radical forgiveness comes from God to me as a free gift simply for the asking. Atonement has been made, and I am now and forever forgiven as I live for him.
If I stumble
According to the parable of the wheat and tares, I exist in this world as a mixture of good and evil, heaven and hell, righteousness and unrighteousness. I cannot help but make mistakes and stumble. When I recognize my sin, I can ask forgiveness again and be cleansed from it. This is the path to perfection. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
Jesus himself is standing by and ready to plead my case before the Father. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 1 John 2:1
Jesus, I confess my sin to you. I ask you to forgive me for all my sins. Thank you for cleansing me and making me whole. Amen.
The Good News
From the day of Pentecost onward, Jesus has been preached by the early church fathers with a single coherent message. Jesus is both high priest, King, sacrifice, and advocate. Gospel means ‘good news’ and it is the single message to the world that brings me to the cross and gives me the new birth when I believe. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. Acts 5:31
Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: Acts 13:38
To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Acts 26:18
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Ephesians 1:7
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Colossians 1:14
Jesus, I thank you for your sacrifice that atoned for my sins. I thank you for your mercy to me that saved me and gave me new life. I thank you for your love toward me that brought me to you. I accept the good news and will live for you from now on as you live in me. Amen.
The finality of my forgiveness depends on steadfast righteousness as I grow spiritually. The one sacrifice of atonement by Jesus Christ on the Cross is the only way I can be forgiven. God knows my heart and acknowledges my sincerity. Any pretense on my part will result in disaster. I cannot pretend to be a child of God on Sunday and live like the devil the rest of the week expecting to reap the benefits of this forgiveness.
For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, Hebrews 10:26
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; Hebrews 2:3
