Atonement is the key to me being forgiven for my sins. It means to compensate, recompense, reimburse, remunerate, repay, amend, correct, rectify, redress, propitiate, expiate (for), mend and redeem. Almost all of the books of Moses describe over and over methods and rituals of atonement. Sacrifices of bulls and goats were specified along with numerous rituals and laws specifically for this atonement.
God meets me where I am. The Israelites needed sacrifices and offerings as demonstrations of atonement for their sins. This is what God provided in the Law of Moses. What has been done today was commanded by the Lord to make atonement for you. Leviticus 8:34
“This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month you must deny yourselves and not do any work—whether native-born or a foreigner residing among you— because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the Lord, you will be clean from all your sins. Leviticus 16:29-30
Abraham understood this concept of atonement and also knew that God would provide the offering sacrifice. Therefore, when asked to sacrifice his son, Isaac, he obeyed and had to be stopped by the angel to prevent the death of his son. Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. Genesis 22:8
Almighty God, thank you for meeting me where I am.Thank you for providing your word to show me how great is my sin. Thank you for Jesus Christ who atoned for my sin on the cross at Calvary. Amen.
Never mentioned directly in the Psalms, atonement is implied for forgiveness from God because of his great mercy. King David wrote several Psalms about cleansing and forgiveness. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. . .Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Psalm 51:1,2,7
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. . .Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Amen
Isaiah had a vision where he saw God in heaven and he was distressed because of his sin. Not to worry, God sent an angel to touch his lips with a hot coal for atonement.
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” Isaiah 6:5-7
Almighty God. Forgive my sins and blot out my transgressions. Only by your great mercy can I be clean and able to stand in your presence. Amen.
